Hollywood Hears A Who!

Saw Horton Hears A Who! last week, I thought it was pretty good, not 4 stars good though. The rest of the clan liked it more. We saw it at AMC Tyson’s Corner. TC is our favorite place to see a family movie. (Otherwise it’s the AFI in Silver Spring, hands down.) Tip: buy tickets from the kiosks and skip the ticket lines. In theater #3 where we saw HHaW! there is a large landing halfway up where you have about 8 feet of leg room in front of you, sweet. It’s a comfortable place to eat $40 worth of movie house shit.

As for the movie, it’s a visual beauty. Quick question: can Hollywood look beyond Jim Carrey? He was Horton and he was . . . meh. For me, he’s one of those “always on” types. Prettyboy Ashton Kutcher who was Elliot in Open Season would have been a better choice IMHO. OTOH, Carol Burnett as the haughty kangaroo mom was excellent, wonderful to hear her voice again. Charles Osgood narrates, perfect choice. The mayor of Whoville was Steve Carell, again . . . meh. The scene stealer was Vlad the vulture, voiced by Will Arnett. (Whoever he is)

One thing missing was the inclusion of jokes for adults. I caught one reference to the great sci-fi movie The Thing when a character said “watch the skies . . . keep watching the skies.” I was the only one in the theater who got it :-). Of course it had to jam a message down our popcorn salt encrusted, diet coke glazed gullets: Everyone, no matter how small . . . blah . . . message . . . blah . . . Whatever.

All in all, it’s a movie worth seeing.

BTW, here’s a site that gives you more info than you probably want about violence, sex, gore etc. in movies. It’s a good resource if you’re not sure about a movie that your daughter is begging you to see cuz her pals have “all seen it, it’s OK . . .”
