Scroll all the way to the 'Avatar'(bottom of the page) subheading. Beside where it says "Avatar Display", select "Don't show Avatars". Now, re-enable the Gravatar plugin. I found it while trying to find a solution for my own problem with the same plugin. By the way, what type of bun is a 'brioche'? Is that the buns in the picture?
